Free Mammograms Through "Tough Enough To Wear Pink" Campaign

A major announcement was made at the NMSU Aggies football press conference where they're gearing up for this weekend's tough enough to wear pink campaign.

Last year it was the second largest tough enough to wear pink fundraiser in the world, the highest in the nation. This year the goals are higher.

"I am proud to announce that through combined efforts Memorial Medical Center and Mountain View Regional Medical Center are making 300 mammograms available to Dona Ana County women who might not otherwise have the access to this life saving breast cancer screening," said Laura Conniff, breast cancer survivor and NMSU regents members.

Sophia Osollo learned about her eligibility for the Breast and Cervical Cancer screening program a year and a half ago.

Her insurance deductible was more than she could afford, but she had insurance so she thought she would not be eligible,

“That's why I applied for it. My insurance was to high for me and my income was kind of low so I did qualify,” said Osollo.

According to the New Mexico State Department of Health the underinsured rate is approaching 30 percent in some populations, particularly Hispanic women.

“I had a mammogram done. I had a lump and they had to remove that lump. They did a biopsy. Thank God it was negative and it was benign.

Women who want to apply will go through a screening at a participating health clinic and then receive a "pink certificate" for their mammogram.

“If we're able to prevent any individual, through early detection, prevent a death, this is going to make this a success,” said Paul Herzog, CEO of Memorial Medical Center.

Women who would like more information or to see if they are eligible can call 575-528-5063.
