EL PASO, Texas -- It may have taken some of them almost four hours to get to Santa Teresa, but ask any pilot and they'll tell you it's worth every minute.“This is the land of enchantment,” said Les Preston, who flew in from Windsor, CO. “I thought this would be a great opportunity to meet people with like interest."The War Eagles Air Museum in Santa Teresa hosted the Land of Enchantment Fly-In. It’s sort of like a car show, but for planes instead. There, you could get a glimpse of an aircraft named the High Roller, decked with playing cards on the wings. All of the planes were built by their pilots. So what makes someone want to build their own plane?"Lack of funds,” laughed Preston. “it's slightly less expensive to build an airplane than to buy one."The average cost of a manufactured plane like ones featured at the show is 150,000.This year, folks checked out 75 planes. That's a number that's fewer than the 135 planes they got to look at last year."The turnout is a little down this year,” said event organizer Larry Vetterman. “I think a number of things. We didn't have a very good weather forecast."But the dark clouds didn't spoil the fun."It's a laid-back thing,” said Vetterman. “It's kind of a family deal. We come here to see our old friends."Organizers will host a raffle. Proceeds will be donated to The Mesilla Valley Community of Hope in Las Cruces and the Lee and Beulah Moor Children’s Home in El Paso. Last year, the event organizers gave $7,000 to each organization.
