El Pasoans Weigh In On Hip-Hop And Violence
El Pasoans have concerns about hip-hop music. They question if it’s to blame for a recent shooting.A debate held Thursday afternoon by the Del Pueblo Alliance wanted to get to the bottom of that question and also whether hip-hop music encourages violence against women. So can the finger be pointed at hip-hop music?“I personally don't think it's a good thing to be promoting it at night clubs. It's dangerous,” said Suky Ruiz of East El Paso.As KFOX reported, about two weeks ago Graham Central Station held hip-hop night, where police believe 28-year-old Deshaun Williams shot at a crowd in the parking lot, injuring 11 people."Whenever you have a hip-hop night, unfortunately the people that happened to like that kind of music-- it attracts gang members,” said Officer Chris Mears with the El Paso Police Department. One parent agrees, she said the music should still be sold, but as far as having a sole hip-hop night, that's just trouble waiting to happen."To bring it out in public, especially to a night club that's going to bring out a bad crowd and that's what's going to happen. Unfortunately good kids get caught up in the middle of the whole thing,” Ruiz said.An El Paso rap artist who spoke at the debate tells KFOX what he thinks. "Being an artist, you know-- come up and be famous -- and for somebody to just point a finger at hip-hop and say that it's hip-hop, it's a kick to me in the ribs,” said Matula Kilad.Other El Pasoans agree with the artist."I believe it's just the person themselves that chooses to actually do the wrong thing. It's more of the alcohol and drugs and all of that, that influences them to do all of those things instead of music,” Adrian Reyes said."It's just music and that's they're career and that's how they get their money,” said Melissa Guzman of East El Paso. The debate, organized by the Del Pueblo Alliance, a group of artist and El Pasoans said their goal is to ultimately promote the history, culture and dialogue of issues that impact the border.
