LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Southern New Mexico fairgoers are noticing fewer animals being entered into shows this year. Some visitors said the economy may have an effect on next year’s shows, and not just in New Mexico. The top animals in each class get to go to sale on Friday, but the sale price isn't what it used to be, because fair supporters also have much less to spend.Kyndra Jordan brought her steer to the fair from Truth or Consequences, but feed and fuel have made it harder. She also knows the return will be less.“Right now the packing price is really low. It’s only 85 cents a pound, and last year I think it was a dollar,” Jordan said.Sponsors used to spend a lot too, but they don't have as much to do so lately.“The buyers are really concerned. I talked to a gentleman from PNM, and he's got no money to spend on livestock purchases this year, where in the past they've always been one of our big sponsors,” said Susan Swope, agriculture teacher from Deming. The cost factor is rippling throughout the livestock barns.“With my steers, a few years ago it was $7 a bag. This year it jumped to $14,” said Emily Hays from Deming. “Normally I travel to stock shows throughout the United States, and I know I’m not going this year because gas is too expensive,” said Jordan Sullivan from Las Cruces’ North Valley.Livestock Show secretary John Campbell said most entries are closer to the fair, with some numbers up, some down.“Poultry and rabbits are about the same. There is a slight decrease in lambs and pigs,” said Campbell.“I've seen lots more of my students interested in getting the smaller rabbits and chickens. They get the rabbits because they can't afford to have three or four of the steers and the lambs,” said Swope. Some students who've entered animals said with fewer people entering, the chances for a sale increase for them, and they're not complaining about that.
