Solar Energy Tour Stops In Sun City

Ovens baking cookies, fountains and flat-screen TVs were all powered by one thing Sunday: the sun.

"If you can run a display like this, and they're only using four panels, you can easily run your home," Jason Hamilton, president of the El Paso Solar Energy Association, said.

Hamilton said converting the sun's rays into electricity is not hard to do. In fact, it could save people thousands of dollars in the long run.

"You don't have to worry about the rates going up, fuel surcharges, you've got it all taken care of," Hamilton said.

Downtown's Insights Science Museum hosted a free public exhibit Sunday, put on by the National City Tour For Solar. The program's goal is to educate people about the possibility of powering El Paso with the sun, and what that could mean to our region.

"Local jobs, electricity for your community right where you live, clean power and independence from foreign oil," Chris Nichols of City Tour For Solar said.
