EL PASO, Texas -- Sergio Gutierrez walked across the 3000 block of Alameda when he was struck by a Ford Explorer Thursday night.

Witnesses told police Gutierrez, who turned 45 years old Friday, had crossed Alameda Avenue near Raynor Street when Jorge Saucedo, 38, struck him. Witnesses said the man crossed the road at an angle and had his back turned to traffic.

The crash happened a 7:38 p.m. Paramedics took Gutierrez to Thomason Hospital with serious head injuries.

investigators believe that Gutierrez was intoxicated.

Saucedo was not injured during the collision.

Gutierrez remains in critical condition.
