Residents Want Animal Cruelty Investigation

Montana Vista residents couldn't endure looking at the condition of a horse at a home on Desert Willow Drive.

"I went back to the horse, and it was infested with flies. It has diarrhea, like no other," said Laurie Seaman, a woman who takes care of horses in the area.

Animal Control was called on Aug. 27, and officers came to see the horse. The next day, they were able to contact the owner and found out she had just bought the horse and told her the horse needed a veterinarian. When the vet examined the horse a day later, he recommended the horse be euthanized and also told the owner about dietary treatment. The following week, Animal Control officers made a follow-up visit, and no food was found in the barn.

"I don't think it's right, even if the horse is older, that she's not feeding it at all. There's no food whatsoever for any of those horses to eat," said Seaman.

Seaman and other residents don't see why this is not being investigated as an animal cruelty case. Animal Control Director Ray Sim said the owner was already making arrangements to put the horse to sleep. But residents argue that was a week ago.

"I talked to the owner of the horse on Tuesday and told her we were very concerned about the animal and if she didn't provide veterinary care for it or a consultation with Dr. Heath we were going to seek an injunction with the judge to remove the animal," said Sim.

The horse was euthanized three weeks after the first outcry to Animal Control. The vet believes the horse wasn't able to eat for those three weeks. Residents said their concern remains for the other animals at the home.

"If it goes on not being fed, it's going to end up the same way, I'm afraid," said Seaman.

Earlier, KFOX tried to get the owner's side of the story, but she asked report to leave her property.

Sim said officers will continue monitoring the property because they have concerns for another horse and a dog there.
