Dona Ana County Animal Hoarding Case Discovered By Ditch Rider

There has been another case of animal hoarding in Dona Ana County. The most recent case was discovered Monday night.

This week there were about 30 cats and 30 dogs found roaming in the tall weeds of a South Valley property.

Dona Ana County Animal Control Director Curtis Childress said the owners used to breed dogs, but have since gotten out of the business.

Tuesday, they began processing the animals, some of which were not looking too healthy.

One cat was missing an eye, one dog couldn’t walk, and another dog had a large tumor.

“Several of the animals have abrasions around their ears or different parts of their body so we'll be checking all of those,” said Curtis Childress, director of Animal Control.

The county code allows six animals on a property without a permit. The owners of this mobile home had nearly 70, found by a ditch rider.

“He noticed dogs popping up out of the weeds and barking. He believed that there were a large number of animals. He eventually came to us," said Childress.

One neighbor said there were several complaints about the dogs within his neighborhood.

“There been a lot of people that live down near them that have been complaining. I didn't know exactly how many they had because they got so many weeds. You can't see them,” said neighbor Bobby Ford.

This is just one of several large hoarding cases that has come to the county's attention. Most have been turned in by residents.

Charges against Sharon Duttle, and her son are pending.
