Skunks Becoming Nuisance At Health Dept. Immunization Clinic

They've moved into a New Mexico Health Department immunization clinic, and visitors want them out.

A family of skunks has become a nuisance to people who have to visit the clinic and those who work there.

The past couple of days visitors said the smell was horrible, but that's not all. They also said they could either wait inside, or outside where there are tons of mosquitoes.

“It's awful. It's terrible. It’s nothing that you actually want to be close to,” said Mirella Rey from Mesilla Park.

“When we get rains and warm weather, we've had issues in the past with families of skunks moving in underneath the building. People will notice that smell when they come into the building,” said Chris Minnick, spokesman for the New Mexico Health Department.

Rey said it was hard to avoid the smell, and she would not have minded standing outside, but the mosquitoes were biting out there, possibly breeding in water pools outside the building.

“As far as the water, Vector Control has treated the water against West Nile. We've had quite a bit of rain in Dona Ana County the last couple of months,” said Minnick.

Another health building in northern Dona Ana County has also had a few skunk run-ins.

“This building and the one in Dona Ana Village in the northern part of the county have had problems. If any clients do come in and they have complaints, they can let the clerk know there,” said Minnick.

The health department said the county is good at coming in and removing the skunks as they are reported.
