U.S. Raises Concerns Over Safety Of Mexican Meat

Posted: 2:01 am MDT September 5, 2008Updated: 8:38 am MDT September 5, 2008

Mexico has agreed to suspend all of its meat imports to the U.S. after a summer inspection.

The U.S Department of Agriculture found sanitation and record keeping problems with Mexican beef and poultry during the inspection.

Since August 29 Mexico has voluntarily agreed to suspend its exports of beef and poultry to the U.S. until it can get the problem under control.

Some El Pasoans said they have noticed a difference in Mexican meat compared to meat from the United States.

"The meat over there is not so red. Here it is really red . It has more taste over there. I think," said Zoe Epinoza. He lived in Mexico for nine years.

About 2 percent of all meat and poultry in the United States come from Mexico. No word on how long the suspension will last.
