Beetle Infestation Not A Bad Thing

Most El Pasoans can't help but notice the beetle infestation across the Borderland recently.

The big black ground beetles can grow to be more than an inch long. An expert with Texas AgriLife told KFOX the abundance in population is due to the summer rain and humidity. The nocturnal bug is attracted to light and is often seen crawling in parking lots or gas stations.

"They were all over the place, and I couldn't pump gas comfortably. I had to do it quickly and watch where I was stepping," said Annai Escobedo of Clint.

The beetles also tend to be more visible during sunset and sunrise, and lately they seem to find their way through every crack.

"I seriously had to keep an eye on them, so that they wouldn't get in my car," said Escobedo.

"They're annoying because they just get in the way. It's hard to kill them sometimes," said Leslie Hypolite of west El Paso.

However, experts said the critters are beneficial to the ecosystem. They may be a nuisance for some people, but beetles prey on pests, including caterpillars that can affect crops.

Experts said the overwhelming number of beetles will likely decrease in about a month because they're seasonal to the desert region.

The big black ground beetle will likely bite if it's bothered or feels threatened, but it is not poisonous.
