YISD Calls Pest Control At Hacienda Heights Elementary

Life at school has changed for a lot of children at Hacienda Heights Elementary.

"When we were playing, we saw some around the jungle gym. My coach tried to catch in a bag of mice," said Omunique Fisher, a third-grader at Hacienda Heights.

A mouse sighting could be exciting for some children but not for parents. Nicole Holguin, a parent, said some children were asked to leave their room.

"They took them out because the little kids had seen rats. When I went to the back, another lady suggested to tell office," said Holguin.

"With all the diseases they carry and what if it bites one of the kids," said another parent, Gilbert Avila.

Avila explained what his daughter saw one day.

"One time she saw it in her class, a mouse with big teeth," said Avila.

The YISD spokeswoman, Patricial Ayalla, said there are field mice at Hacienda Heights. She said because of the recent rains mice are trying to seek shelter inside the school.

"Currently, they're looking at sealing all pipes. We believe the mice are outside and are coming in due to the heavy rains and the humidity. Now that it's getting a little cooler the mice are going inside the building," said Ayalla.

YISD called a pest control company. They've been at the school twice already. Now, the only concern is finding dead mice around the school.

"I don't want to play in the jungle gym that much now," said Fisher.

A spokeswoman with Health and Environmental Services said code compliance inspected the school and found no violations. The Health Department also visited the school on Thursday morning and checked the cafeteria and found no problems there either.
