Commuter Delays Expected In Highway Construction Project

A heavily traveled New Mexico highway that runs between Anthony and Chaparral is slated to get a new surface next week.

Wednesday, New Mexico Highway 404, which goes through the Anthony Gap, will undergo street resurfacing just east of Interstate 10.

Construction will begin right next to Dona Ana County Community College Gadsden Branch, and continue eastward for nine miles to Chaparral.

Commuters will be asked to find either alternative routes or be prepared to sit and wait as the two-lane stretch of highway will be reduced to one lane.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation wants commuters to plan ahead so they are not late getting to or from Anthony and Chaparral.

“People can expect delays. We're going to have a reduction in speed. We're going to have a pilot car and we're going to have message boards advising people that there is going to be roadwork ahead. It's going to be posted on the Texas side and on the New Mexico side," said Bridget Spedalieri, spokeswoman for the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The construction is expected to last a few weeks and it will cost a little more than $2 million to complete.
