DONA ANA COUNTY, N.M. -- The Bureau of Land Management is asking visitors to Aguirre Springs about fee adjustments for the campground.Just Monday, the Bureau of Land Management closed down sections of the campground to make $300,000 in renovations.Visitors pay $3 dollars to use the campground during the day or overnight. Some said the fee is OK as it is, others said it makes it difficult for the BLM to stay competitive with other state campgrounds, which charge $8 for camping.“The only thing that I can think of that it really needs is a water source closer by. It's about 8 miles round trip to get fresh water,” said Shane Sommers of Las Cruces’ East Mesa.Part of the campground will be closed through Mid-October while renovations, including the replacement of picnic tables, the upgrade of parking areas and replacement of trash cans takes place.“We have aluminum trash cans there right now that animals get into. They will be replaced with animal proof boxes, “said Eric Ernst, BLM park Ranger. The upgrades will cost about $300,000. In the meantime rangers are asking for input.“It's a survey. We're getting a feel for what the public thinks about the fees as they are asked whether they should be increased, decreased or left as they are,” said Ernst.“We actually only paid $6 so we got up here sat so I'd be willing to pay five or six for overnight,” said Sommers. One mom said the accessibility is great now, and it will become even better for those who need more handicap accessibility.“A lot of people don't have cars that can go into certain areas so it's nice that they've made is that any car can get up here and use the amenities,” said Kimberly Sommers of Las Cruces. There are no immediate plans to raise the campground fees, but rangers did also ask visitors to Dripping Springs Recreation Area what they thought about fees just a few months ago.
