The gulf coast prepares for another hurricane landfall next week, but the southern New Mexico chapter of the Red Cross is getting ready for it Wednesday.

The Las Cruces office already has three volunteers planning to leave Thursday and Saturday to respond.

The volunteers will deploy to San Antonio and get their assignments.

Already Gustav has blasted though the Carribean knocking over trees and causing eight deaths in Haiti, and seven more in the Dominican Republic.

One volunteer was sent out after hurricane Katrina and brings her experience in dealing with disasters with her.

"They give you the classes ahead of time for me I'm going to be doing the mass shelter there's an orientation class and then you're specific field that you're going to be volunteering in they'll give you an orientation for that and then train you when you get to where you are going then they tell you more," said Red Cross volunteer Laura Wright.

The southern New Mexico chapter is recruiting volunteers for local and national disaster relief.

Anyone interested can attend an informational meeting Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at the Red Cross office at 1301 East Griggs Street in Las Cruces.

For more information, you can call the Red Cross at 575-526-2631.
