EL PASO, Texas -- Some residents in El Paso believe the stressed economy is to blame for millions of Americans not having health insurance.

According to just - released information from the U.S Census Bureau on insured and uninsured residents, last year more than 45 million people didn't have health insurance, which is 15 percent of U.S. residents.

That may seem like a lot but, but it’s actually 1.3 million fewer people than in 2006.

Insurance can be pricey, especially when people are trying to cope with the high prices of gas, food and milk.

A Central El Paso father KFOX caught up with said he makes sure his family is insured, but he also said why he thinks many here in the Sun City are uninsured. "I think it's just there’s not a lot of information that's out there, or the information is out there, but people are not looking for that information. I think that's the primary thing that's causing people to not have insurance,” said Martin Valenzuela of Central El Paso.

Many of the newly insured were children. Other new enrollers joined Medicaid or state-sponsored health insurance programs, according to the U.S Census Bureau.
