El Pasoans Still Want Tax Relief

El Pasoans are telling state lawmakers they want more property tax relief.

The Texas House Interim Committee on Property Tax Relief and Appraisal Reform met Tuesday in El Paso.

They are studying ways to ease the tax burden on homeowners and create a more efficient system for appraising home values.

One option under consideration is requiring appraisals every two years, instead of annually.

"I would go for the two years because every year my taxes are raised. So, I would go for the two years," said El Pasoan Maria Gallego.

Despite the Texas Legislature cutting property tax rates a couple of years ago, rising property values and increasing requests from local taxing authorities have sent most residence property tax bills higher.
