Las Cruces Best Buy Employee Accused Of Shopping With Customers' Credit Cards

A former Las Cruces Best Buy employee was indicted by the grand jury Thursday on charges of felony credit card fraud.

The alleged incidents took place between October of 2007 and April 2008 and involved six Best Buy customers' credit accounts.

The fraudulent purchases were reported to store managers and sheriff 's investigators, said officials.

Amanda Hopkins worked as a customer representative at the Las Cruces store. Her duties were opening new accounts for customers. She obtained customer credit information and used the information make numerous purchases on their accounts, according to the indictment.

The grand jury indicted Hopkins on three counts of fraudulent usee of a credit card over $2,500, a third-degree felony and three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card over $500, a fourth-degree felony.

Hopkins was also indicted on more than 20 counts of fraudulent signing of a Credit card slip, and one count of disposing of stolen property, a fourth-degree felony.

The items purchased included televisions, computers, video games, cell phones, iPods, DVD movies and other electronic items said officials.

Best Buy management has taken steps to ensure this does not happen again, said deputies.

The customers who were affected were issued new cards and given gift cards to the store.

The sheriff 's department reminds everyone of the dangers of credit card fraud. Deputies urge people to safeguard their credit information and monitor their accounts regularly and report any unusual activity to your credit agency or to the appropriate law enforcement agency.
