Las Cruces Taxi, Limo Service Closes Doors

Posted: 6:53 pm MDT August 19, 2008Updated: 8:43 pm MDT August 19, 2008

A Las Cruces limo and taxi service is no longer in operation as of last week.

The sign on the door of Las Cruces Limousine and LCL taxi reads:

"Due to circumstances beyond our control, Las Cruces Limousine Service, Inc, and LCL Taxi Service, has closed. Further information will be available at a later date. We are sorry of any inconvenience."

Customers are now wondering if the service they booked in advance will be available.

“They don't answer the phone. Every time I go to the door there's nobody there, and to my understanding, I'm not going to get my money back or my limo,” said a woman who called KFOX concerned about a quincenera.

This caller who wished not to be identified learned about the closure from a bridal shop KFOX had called earlier.

The caller paid $200 down for a limousine for a quincenera next month.

“I went in and they asked me if I was using that company. I said ‘yes” and I rushed over there and found out that there was a sign on the door,” said the caller.

The owner of the company said a vehicle accident last year prompted insurance premiums to double. They went from roughly $20,000 $40,000.

He said he shut the doors because he could not get the insurance he needed to safely run the business.

Customers can call another cab company in town, Checker Cab. A spokesman for Checker said the company picked up a few of the drivers from LCL, and if they need to insure more cabs they will.

Some residents don't think there is that great a need with this size of city.

“It seems pretty small so I think one should be fine, said Sean Kaerwer of South Las Cruces.

The LCL cab company also served NMSU students with free rides. NMSU foot the bill. Students said they will now rely on friends.

“I would probably call a friend instead. It would probably be cheaper than spending money on a taxi cab,” said Tyler Muhs, an NMSU student.

The accident may result in a lawsuit, and the owner of the taxi and limo service says it's unclear if bankruptcy will follow. It's also unclear a whether the quincenera will have a limo next month.
