Texas To Execute Murderer's Accomplice

This week a Texas inmate is scheduled to be put to death under a state law that allows some accomplices to face the same punishment as killers.

Jeffrey Wood is scheduled to die Thursday in connection with the 1996 shooting of a Kerrville convenience store clerk, Kriss Keeran. The court concluded that Jeffrey Wood and Daniel Reneau had schemed to rob the store with inside help from one of the stores employees. But Reneau has already been executed for Keeran's murder and according to court testimony, Wood was sitting in a pickup truck outside the story when the murder happened.

"Someone else did the murder, not him, he was in the car, outside," said Richard Dieter, the executive director of the Death Penalty Information Center. "It's hard to say what was on his mind but he wasn't a participant, he didn't make this happen."

Wood is convicted under a little known state law where accomplices in felonies can face the death penalty. More than two dozen states have similar laws, but it is rare for a person to be executed under them. If he is put to death Thursday, Wood will be the ninth inmate to die in 30 years under this rule.

Gov. Rick Perry may still issue a stay of execution, which he did for death-row inmate Kenneth Foster in a similar case a year ago. However, Perry's representative on Tuesday said the governor hasn't yet decided on Wood's case.
