Monsoonal Rain Means Allergies For Borderland Residents

Posted: 7:34 pm MDT August 13, 2008Updated: 10:54 pm MDT August 13, 2008

Down comes the rain, then up goes the number of allergy attacks in the borderland.

Diana Sarnahan of West El Paso said, “You feel sick, and you're constantly sneezing and rubbing your eyes, and it can be very miserable.”

Allergists say more El Pasoans complain of respiratory problems during the monsoonal months than any other time of year.

Allergist Dr. Lyndon Mansfield said the reason is, “the pollen count has gone from low to moderate and now starting to get into the high range.”

Making up the bulk of these problematic pollen is Bermuda grass, which is now in full bloom. To treat this and other allergens, several over-the-counter remedies are available, but if that doesn't work, you may need to see a doctor. The most obvious solution to these kinds of allergic reactions is staying indoors.

“If you're really having a lot of trouble and you go out into the park and play in the grass, right now you're going to have a lot of difficulty,” Mansfield continued.

For those who aren't willing to give up their favorite outdoor activities this summer like El Pasoan Ray Ruiz, he said, “Just try to take any allergy medicine that helps”
