Large Sinkhole Places Business On Hold

Crews worked all day Friday, repairing a 10-foot sink hole in the median at the intersection of Lomaland Drive and Gateway West Boulevard.

A lot of mud and water on the road forced crews to completely close the underpass on Lomaland Drive, between Gateways East and West, as well as a couple of lanes ,since they worried the hollow street and traffic could make the situation dangerous.

Police said a driver who fled the scene hit a fire hydrant on the median of the intersection, just before 3 a.m., which is what caused the massive sink hole.

"It's taken a toll on all of our business, we have no customers right now, 0-percent in sales today,” said Ernesto Velasquez, Exxon gas station clerk.

The clerk told KFOX what's supposed to be the best day for business, turned into one of the worst.

“Fridays have always been good, in eight years that I've been here, Fridays are our best days. Today the cars have passed through our parking lot, but they don't put gas because of the traffic tie-up up there and nobody stops,” Velasquez said.

Just like many drivers, Velasquez also had a hard time with his morning commute.

"It took me like, usually it takes me on the side of the freeway like a minute and today it took me like 10 minutes just to get here,” said Velasquez.

The El Paso Water Utilities company said if the driver who caused this incident is located, they will be responsible for paying the cost of damages.

Authorities also told KFOX the driver will face a traffic citation.
