ANTHONY, N.M. -- Residents living along the Three Saints Road in rural Anthony, N.M. called 911 after hearing a loud crash down the street from their home at 12:20 a.m Friday. The family told KFOX they found a motionless man laying near his crashed vehicle. The 1973 orange Chevy Blazer was on its side next to a canal bank. Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies who investigated the crash said skid marks on the street indicate the man was speeding on the winding road that has no lights.“I’ve personally have handled several crashes here. It’s a narrow farm road, and the crashes occur at night because there’s no exterior lighting anywhere,” Deputy Tim Sherman, who investigated the crash. The roof of the SUV came off in the crash. Sherman said the vehicle’s equipped with lap belts, but it didn’t appear the victim was using one.“Lap belts don’t do a good job keeping people from being ejected, but it’s a possibility it would’ve helped a little bit here,” said Sherman, who also said alcohol is not suspected in the crash. The man’s name has not been released. He is 27 years old and from Anthony, N.M. Officials believe he was on his way home. No one else was involved in the crash.
