El Paso Boy Killed In Armed Robbery

Posted: 4:11 pm MDT July 30, 2008Updated: 8:55 pm MDT July 30, 2008

Rico Banuelas, 11, was shot and killed during a robbery in Mexico. The boy attended church at Saint Pius in Central El Paso and is the nephew of respected priest Father Arturo Banuelas.

Rico Banuelas, his two older siblings and mother, Patricia, were vacationing in Mazatlan, Mexico, this week, when gunmen stopped the family's car to rob them. Mexican police said the driver of Banuelas' car tried to flee the scene and at that point, the gunmen opened fire, shooting Banuelas in the head. The mother was also shot and remains in the hospital. Police have arrested three men in connection with the killing -- men who Saint Pius Deacon Szostek said the family has already found the strength to forgive.

"That's pretty difficult. But they found out they were apprehended and they are going to go talk to them and let them know how much hurt they've caused," Szostek said.

The service for Banuelas is expected to be held at Saint Pius sometime next week. Anyone who'd like to make a donation on behalf of the Banuelas family can call the church at 772-3226
