Bumper Stickers May Pinpoint Aggressive Drivers

According to a recent study done by Colorado State University, drivers with "territorial markers" on their vehicle such as bumper stickers or window decals not only get mad when someone cuts them off, but they're far more likely than those who don't personalize their vehicle to honk and tailgate. "Some of these big ol’ trucks that have a picture of, you know, one dogging out the other like Ford against Chevy, sometimes there you get the opinion that they might have a little more tendency for road rage,” said Jerry Walker, of East El Paso. Colorado researchers said it doesn't seem to matter if it's a peace and love bumper sticker like, "My kid 's an honor student " or angry, in-your-face ones like, "My kid beat up your honor student, " the aggressiveness is equal. The driver with a decal that reads, "I’m grumpy back off," said that’s certainly not the case. "The only reason why I have something in the back of my truck is because my kids like Disney and I like Disney stuff so I got a picture of Grumpy in the back of my truck, but other than that it really doesn't say anything about me,” said Joe Tovar, of East El Paso.

Social scientists say people have three kinds of territorial spaces in their head. One is personal territory such as a home or a bedroom. The second involves space that is temporary like an office cubicle or a gym locker. The third kind is public territory, like roads and walking trails, which is why they believe some personalize their vehicle.

Another driver told KFOX that people just put the stickers and decals to be funny and that it doesn’t really mean you’re aggressive on the road.

"I think it's just humor, it just shows how their humor is. I can actually carry like a funny saying but I wouldn't be aggressive on the road,” said Hazel Najera, of East El Paso. The study also showed that people who don't personalize their vehicle also tend to be aggressive drivers, but they don't actually act out their anger. Social scientists say they fume mentally but quickly move on.
