City Agrees To 15 Major Transportation Projects

On the UTEP campus Tuesday, students told KFOX they are tired of the traffic tie-ups when driving to school.

"It's not that good, either way, because it's really jacked up, really messed up so it's not convenient enough," said Jonathan Buck, discussing the long wait to exit at I-10 and Schuster Avenue on school days.

In East El Paso at I-10 and Loop 375, drivers cringe at the thought of having to go from the highway to the interstate.

"It's very hectic, basically you have to wait there sometimes, there's a lot of accidents sometimes," said Rick Espinoza, from the Lower Valley.

Under a TxDOT plan, you could soon go directly from the freeway to Loop 375 and vice versa, along with no more traffic tie-ups at I-10 and Schuster Avenue. Those are just two of 15 projects citywide that could happen in the next three years, with a price tag of $1 billion.

One way to pay is through a new concept called the Transportation Reinvestment Zone.

"As the highways are built, property values typically increase, well that increased taxes that's collected can be dedicated towards a bond that can help pay off that bond in the future," said Chuck Berry with TxDOT.

Another way to pay is through toll lanes, mostly on Loop 375. You would have free lanes and toll lanes next to each other, where you can decide to pay for a potentially faster commute.

"It might be a little bit, but once we're talking about everyday, and everyday, it'll add up to even more," said Valeria Oaxaca, from the Lower Valley.

"If you don't like it, you can go somewhere where they don't toll you," said UTEP student Kenny Megliorino.

Another large project of note is the completion of Loop 375. This is far from over, as several more organizations and commissions have to approve the plan before anyone can start breaking ground.
