EL PASO, Texas -- Authorities released the name of one of the drivers involved in a racing competition on Socorro Road that ended in a death. Two men were arrested after a car wreck that caused the death of 21-year-old Ana Elva Morales. The El Paso Sheriff's Department said Morales died at the scene. Morales is believed to be the mother of the two young children who were passengers in the Toyota 4Runner she was driving. The children were taken to the hospital, while the drivers racing were taken into custody on Tuesday afternoon after the car wreck. The smallest car involved in a fatal wreck on Socorro Road and Herring has the entire front end smashed in. El Paso sheriff's deputies said the red Ford Focus and a Ford Mustang, driven by Alberto Valdez, 22, were racing eastbound on Socorro Road."This is an everyday thing. Racing here is frequent. It is, but we've never seen this," said Paula Rojas, who helped the people in the crash. While Valdez managed to brake in time, the red Focus T-boned the Toyota 4Runner so hard it caused it to roll over. Deputies said Morales stopped at the intersection and proceeded north on Herring not realizing how fast the racing cars were going."We ran. We called 911," said Isabel Rojas. It happened right in front of Rojas' house. When Rojas and her sister approached the wreck, they said they didn't realize there were three people in the Toyota."We saw the lady was under the truck. We heard a little boy crying and then all of a sudden we heard another scream and we saw that the little girl was almost at the edge of the street," said Isabel Rojas.Sheriff's officials said the boy, who is between 6 months and 1 year old, was still strapped into to his car seat. The 3-year-old girl was ejected a few feet away from the SUV."I got kids of my own. It kills me to hear the little girl asking for her mommy. It kills me," said Paula Rojas. The woman died at the scene and the children were taken to the hospital. Valdez and the driver of the Focus were taken into custody."It's traumatic. It's painful to know those two kids don't have their mother with them anymore," said Isabel Rojas.Sheriff's deputies said the driver of the Ford Focus is facing manslaughter charges. Valdez was arrested and pending a charge of racing but could be enhanced because he has been arrested on suspicion of racing before.
