Steady Showers In Dona Ana Draw Residents Outside

Residents driving in Dona Ana were turned away from Dona Ana road at the Hayride intersection Thursday morning. The road was being washed away, the asphalt peeling away with the rushing water.

“It caused me to come down to see what was going on. I wanted to see how high the water was because in 2006 I got flooded out of my house in 4 feet of water," said Skip Conneley, Dona Ana resident.

Conneley said this road will need to be fixed.

“I think they're going to have to do some work on this. I have seen it run over many times before; only a few times has it flowed over and flooded us out,” said Conneley.

You could see more of the same a few miles south on Dona Ana Road at the Lujan Road intersection.

Sheriff's deputies said they were asked to keep people from driving through. Those out on the road said they're just checking out what was happening.

“Well, it's awesome. It just looks great to see. I'm sorry for the people that are being affected with it because I know some people are being flooded, but for us this is wonderful. We live in the desert, and when we get water we just love it,” said Elva Melendrez of Radium Springs.

Melendrez and her husband were looking for people who needed help. They stopped at Faulker Canyon near Radium Springs as a tree was floating by.

“The Transportation Department has done a lot by clearing the arroyos. They cleaned everything up and invested a lot of time and effort and money,' said Melendrez.

Back in Central Las Cruces, many people went out in their vehicles to inspect the arroyos near their homes.

“Before it washed out, it flooded out the whole area. There’s a rock wall that goes out to a ditch. It washed away everybody's back yard before,” said Henry O. Perkins of Las Cruces.
