Alleged Cockfighting Ring Found in New Mexico

Dona Ana County animal control is investigating a cockfighting ring in the village of Dona Ana.

Officials told KFOX the alleged ring was discovered after authorities were originally called out because two dogs were attacking and killing roosters.

While on the scene officers found cockfighting paraphernalia, including a ring, blades and vitamins.

Animal control officers said the dogs killed 20 roosters, but they were able to save more.

Curtis Childress of Dona Ana County animal control said, "As a result of what they did, it led us to the location, so some of the birds have died as a result, but we were able to spare many of the birds."

Cockfighting is only a misdemeanor charge in New Mexico. As far as the two dogs are concerned, both have been taken into custody and could be put to sleep.
