Southeastern New Mexico Sees Severe Storm

It was a fast-moving storm on Wednesday, but one that found drivers on I-10 near Vado having to slow to a near standstill.

"Well we need the rain, but not like this, we need a soaker, not a runoff," said "T" Molland, driving from El Paso to his home in Elephant Butte.

"The hail we could do without, but we need the rain," said Tom Chavarria, from North Las Cruces.

That was the sentiment of the day: the rain was welcome, but the hail could cause damage.

"You don't want the hail damage to it, because it is a new vehicle, so I just was looking for cover, that's it," said Chavarria.

"Just getting out of it just as quick as I could, because I've been in hail storms before and had damage, so you know, learned my lesson, get out of there, get under something," said Dave Coleman, driving from Dallas.

When the hail left, the rain remained, coming down at a furious pace. Those driving through it couldn't believe that just a few minutes away, it was sunny outside.

"No, I certainly didn't. El Paso was sunny and hot," said Molland.

"No, I really didn't. Didn't expect no hail. I had seen some rain clouds, I thought that was about it," said Chavarria.
