LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- New Mexico state Sen. Lee Rawson who serves Dona Ana and Sierra Counties said he's been notified he could be called for jury duty in June, July and August.Rawson said residents of Dona Ana are three times more likely to be called than those in the more populated Bernalillo because of the size of the county and because there are fewer plea bargains here. The pool could soon open up to include more people next year.“The jury pool right now consists of records provided to the courts of registered voters in the county and people who hold driver’s licenses. This would be to add to that people who file for an income tax in New Mexico,” said Arthur Pepin, the director of the administrative offices of the courts of New Mexico. The expansion could help the courts get better responses as people move or fail to re-register to vote once they have moved.“At the very least, it would help us get the most accurate address we can,” said Pepin.A juror from a murder trial a few years ago said she hasn't been called back, but wouldn't mind if she were called again. “When I served, there was quite a few people that were available. I know a lot of people want to be called. I enjoyed it. It was a good experience,” said Sandra Portillo of Anthony, N.M.Some residents have another suggestion.“The state should get professional jurors that have the basic knowledge of how the court system works,” said Salvador Medina of Palm Springs, Calif.Rawson believes those who are in the tax filers database as of July 1 could be included in next year;s pool source expansion, which could be drawn from next July.“With people that pay taxes, I believe it would just make the jury selection bigger and better," said Debbie McNab of Dona Ana.The request for the expansion has been made to the taxation and revenue department. The department will need to break down state filers into counties, which determines which court district they live in.
