KFOX Update: SISD Superintendent May Soon Be Removed

Posted: 7:04 pm MDT June 7, 2008Updated: 4:34 pm MDT June 8, 2008

The small, quiet-looking announcement on the Socorro School District's web site packs an explosive message: A special meeting of the Board of Trustees to be held Tuesday, June 10 discussing a "separation agreement" with Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Atkinson. Simply put: the embattled official could soon be gone for good.

"Whether it's mutual or whether it's hostile is unknown. We would hope it would be mutual," SISD parent and longtime critic of Atkinson, Danelle Ivey, said.

The special meeting could mark the conclusion of a very tumultuous time for the district. Since Atkinson took office in January 2007, the $400 million bond failed, several top-level administrators left office and, as KFOX uncovered, underqualified applicants with personal connections to Atkinson got hired to key district positions.

"All of these things accumulate until you get to the point of something has to change," Ivey said.

Board President Karen Blaine said because this is a personnel matter, she cannot legally give any details about Tuesday's special meeting. But as KFOX recently reported, the election of Tony Ayub and Joe Sarabia to the board reopened the debate about Atkinson's future.

"Part of the formula may be what's in the best interest of the district is to get a different superintendent," Ayub said back in May.

After KFOX tried to get in touch with Atkinson, a district spokeswoman referred us to the district's attorney, who has not returned any calls.
