Voters Choose Dona Ana County Commissioner

Posted: 7:52 pm MDT June 3, 2008Updated: 9:24 pm MDT June 3, 2008

The candidates for county commissioner in District 2 are Alicia Roman, Alfonso Moreno, and Dolores Saldana-Caviness, the incumbent. Voters in the southern part of Dona Ana County say they were looking to elect someone who could make a difference in their small part of the state.

A small line formed at the Sunland Park community library a few hours before the polls closed Tuesday evening, but voters said overall, turnout was not great.

They also said whether they voted for a new name like Alicia Roman or Alfonso Moreno or re-elected the current District 2 Commissioner Delores Saldaña Caviness, they hope for changes in the future.

“I followed what the current county commissioner had done and I really hadn't seen any changes. My main concern is the city of Sunland Park,” said resident Bertha Tovar.

The voters said they are looking for someone to remember the southern cities and towns when making county decisions.

Some say the incumbent has done that.

“I think Dolores has been very involved and is fully aware of some of the issues that are critical for the city of Sunland Park,” said Sunland Park resident Juan Furentes.

Caviness herself was gathering support outside of Riverside elementary Tuesday afternoon.

“I still have to get up tomorrow morning and report to work so to speak no matter what happens tonight,” said incumbent candidate Dolores Caviness. She said whoever wins it's what's in the best interest in the people of the district.

“I'm hoping that we get a lot more funds from both the federal government and the state to really address the basic needs of southern Dona Ana County," said Caviness.

One voter said she was hoping for county leadership from another candidate.

“The one thing I am looking for is a change. I think we need change in our government and there are far too many needs in the city of Sunland Park," said Tovar.
