A Mobile Home Fire Displaces A San Elizario Family

The 25-year-old mother of a toddler and 3-month-old baby were not home at the time of the fire, they had stayed the night at her mother's home who lives right next door.

"I was going to take my son to school when I saw that one of the neighbors came running," said the victim's mother, Candelaria Garcia.

She said several neighbors tried to help.

"Well we tried putting it out... putting it out with the water hose," Garcia said.

Garcia said it took firefighters a while to get water pressure and although she realizes the San Elizario volunteer fire department did the best they could, she's upset at the amount of time it took them to respond.

"We called 911 dispatch and she told us we had to call the sheriff's first and I don't know why because we were telling her the house was on fire," said Garcia.

The family estimates about $15,000 in damages.

"She lost all of the baby's clothes, everything you need for a baby, the bassinet, the swing everything, everything needed for her baby," said Garcia.

Her mother took us over to her house to show us all that was left, a few of the toddler’s toys and a dresser.

Garcia went on to say, "Everything starts and everything ends, and many times it takes a long time to start something and all of a sudden you lose everything. But, the important thing is that God gives us the strength to start all over.”

Thursday night, the cause of the fire remained unknown but sheriff's officials believe it may have started in the home's boiler.
