Tax Dollars Used To Fight Border Fence

El Paso County Commissioners have already expressed their opinion that they don't want more fencing in the El Paso area. Earlier this month they voted 3-1 on the Anti-Border Wall Resolution.

Commissioners are now considering joining a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security filed by a coalition of mayors and leaders of bordertowns a week ago. However, that will require the use of taxpayer money, which some El Pasoans oppose.

“My basic belief is if they're going to utilize the funds provided from our tax dollars the people should have a say in whether or not they want it done. It's not their money for them to be spending in that way,” said Jack Pearlman, of west El Paso.

“I don't think it's fair. I don't agree with that because they're using our taxes,” said Noemi Hermosillo, of central El Paso.

The lawsuit argues that the federal government has wrongfully taken private property for the construction of the fence. However, Michael Chertoff, Homeland Security Secretary, denied the allegations in a previous interview with KFOX.

"I have no doubt that what I've done is not only what the law permits, but what the law requires. Congress mandated twice that I build this fence and that I do it this year,” he said.

Commissioners will hold a special meeting Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the County Judges Conference room in the County Courthouse at 500 E. San Antonio Avenue.
