How Wilbur The Pig Stays Cool Outdoors

The borderland was only two degrees from tying its record high of 101 degrees.

These kinds of temperatures can be unbearable for some people. Just think what some employees who work outdoors wearing a pig outfit must feel.

His job is to attract attention. You can find him standing on North Mesa, rain or shine, nowadays mainly shine. He would only identify himself as Wilbur.

"A lot of people wave. It's cool, we go catering and I meet a bunch of little kids," said Wilbur.

Wilbur is the mascot that belongs to Famous Dave's Barbecue. While he gets a lot of waves and honks some people have to wonder how hot it must get inside his outfit.

"My manager lets me go inside for a while when it's too hot," said Wilbur.

At 5 space p.m. the temperature reached 99 degrees. It was hot and Wilbur was not. That's because underneath his belly he's carrying an ice pack.

"How long does your ice vest last?" asked a KFOX reporter.

"It lasts a while. Maybe an hour and a half or two hours," said Wilbur.

Wilbur's manager, George Washington, said they take all the necessary precautions to avoid putting Wilbur in danger.

"We make sure they're pretty comfortable. I don't know if people know we have an ice pack. Every 10 to 15 minutes we have them come in, get undressed especially with these hot days coming," said Washington.

While some people may think Wilbur must be cooking like bacon in his outfit, he's actually one cool pig.

"Sometimes it's cool because girls come and hit me up," said Wilbur.
