UPDATED: 10:11 am MDT May 21, 2008

Traffic on Transmountain Road came to a crawl Wednesday during morning rush hour. El Paso County sheriff's deputies found a dark blue Hyundai 130 feet near the picnic area on the northeast side of the mountain at 5:30 a.m. Sgt. Almanza said the driver of the vehicle called 911 and directed deputies to the exact location.

The crushed vehicle landed right side up, but the driver could not get himself out of the vehicle. The El Paso Fire Department's special rescue team used their rappel equipment to reach the victim.

The victim's condition is unknown, but officials said he was conscious and alert throughout the rescue.

Almanza said the 45-year-old El Paso man was on his way to El Paso Community College Northwest campus where he is a peace officer.
