EL PASO, Texas -- A rash of arson fires hit South Central El Paso.Over the weekend, fire investigators were called to several suspicious fires, five of which were ruled as arson. One of the fires at 900 Texas Ave. was only a few blocks from Isabel Gamez's trophy store."I feel very uncomfortable having the fires very close by," said Gamez.Fire officials said it happens in the middle of the night and have other similarities that make them believe it's the same person or persons. The buildings being targeted are abandoned buildings, but the concern of firefighters is that flames can jump to other buildings that could be occupied."That's when the problem begins. When they set the fires too close to these buildings, they can evolve the fire and possibly get someone hurt," said Lt. Mario Hernandez with the El Paso Fire Department. And someone was hurt. Two firefighters were hurt fighting the latest fire that engulfed a building on 1908 Magoffin on Saturday. One of the firefighters had to be rushed to the hospital. While firefighters try and protect the property and lives of El Pasoans, Gamez says it's hard not to worry."I would be pretty upset because people don't know how hard in our business, for someone to go around setting fires which is really senseless," said Gamez. The crime is bumped up to a first-degree felony because someone was hurt as a result of the fire that was set intentionally.
