A growing east El Paso is about to have a grand opening for the area's latest hospital. Friday KFOX got a sneak peek at the Sierra Providence East Medical Center and found out what it means for trauma care on the Borderland. After 119,000 man-hours and $143.9 million spent, the new Sierra Providence East Medical Center is ready to open its doors. The hospital officially opens on Wednesday, but eastsiders are wasting no time taking advantage. "We have surgeries scheduled for Wednesday morning. We have a couple of C-sections and a couple of other procedures," said Roman Castaneda, an administrative director for the hospital. With a brand-new waiting room and state-of-the-art exam rooms, the hospital classifies itself as an acute care hospital, not a trauma center. "We are not a trauma facility, but we are aware that we might have people who come in private vehicle or walk in so we will be taking care of them," said Homero Guaderrama, the director of the emergency room department. The hospital has all of the same equipment a trauma center would and can handle a trauma if it had to. Critics of the hospital ask from where all of the doctors to fill this hospital are going to come. KFOX took that question to administrators. "Doctors, as well with many medical professions, are difficult to find today. What we are doing is we have a great recruiting effort to bring in those doctors," Castaneda said. For now, the hospital has doctors and nurses and plenty of room to expand since east El Paso is growing. Public tours of the Sierra Providence East Medical Center will be available from 12 to 4 p.m.
