EL PASO, Texas -- Jessie Miller, the president of Animal Cruelty Heartline of El Paso or ACHE, bought six horses with money raised. She said unfortunately so many other horses will end up at slaughter houses."If I had more money, I would come here every night and buy older horses, horses that have been hurt or injured and I would find people to take them," said Miller.Miller had to sit through the part of the auction where they show off the healthiest and most beautiful horses. Her interest lies with another type of horse. In the pens, one can find many horses who are injured and running the chance of ending up in Juarez at a slaughter house where their meat is shipped off overseas for human consumption. Most of these horses wear a green tag. A Paint Mare has a deformed hoof that could cost her her life. Miller wants to buy the horse but only to put him to sleep in a humane way."I would actually have a vet check it first. Sometimes you just never know. If it's extreme and chronic, we would put him down. But to me, that's better than letting it suffer even more," said Miller. The suffering some horses endure on their way to the slaughter house is unimaginable. The sad part is the horses with the green tags are not the only running the risk of slaughter. Some slaughter-buyers look for young, healthy horses that sell cheap. Those are the horses Miller says she'd like to save every month."If more people would come and support it, I think, they would be very surprised of what they would find here. They would find real good horses here," said Miller.Miller bought the horses for less than $300 each and she will try to rehabilitate them and find them homes.
