N.M. -- Dona Ana County residents are being asked to share their thoughts on a spaceport tax district in a series of community meetings. The county's legal department will take comments at three meetings starting next week. Those meetings aim to find out how the county should enter into a contract with Sierra County, now that residents from both have approved a gross-receipts tax to support a spaceport. The state statute that allowed the spaceport tax to be imposed if the voters approved it also has other provisions in it about the creation of the tax district and these public hearings are part of that process. The first meeting takes place next Thursday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the Hatch Valley Community Center on Highway 187.Two other meetings will be held on Friday, May 23.The first will be at 8 a.m. at the Dona Ana County Government Center on Motel Boulevard and another will be at 6 p.m. at the Sunland Park Council Chambers on McNutt Road.
