ONLY ON KFOX: East El Paso Bar Parking Controversy Could Have Solution

As KFOX has reported, the parking lot for Three Legged Monkey and Wet Ultra Lounge bars in East El Paso fills up quickly on most nights, and bar-goers have to park in the neighborhoods.

"The neighbors have a valid concern, there are people who are urinating in their yards and creating mischief, vandalism, that kind of stuff, and that's not the type of business people that we are," said Matt Meagher, owner of Wet Ultra Lounge.

"I empathize for them. I sympathize for them, I don't want them to have to deal with anything that is going to disrupt their family and private lives," said Mike Armstrong, owner of Three Legged Monkey.

The two owners said they are well aware of the parking problems, and have now come up with a possible solution, leasing a dirt lot across Montana Avenue for parking.

"Hopefully we are talking with some people at the airport and hopefully that's something that in the near future will be a quick fix to everybody's problem," said Meagher.

The residents, who have directed a lot of their anger at the bar owners, said the city is partially to blame.

"I think the city is somehow responsible, because they allowed three bars in one small shopping center right next to a neighborhood," said Patricia Huelga from East El Paso.

"I think that city council or the city government is going to have a fine line in juggling how to go ahead and be both pro-neighborhood and pro-business," Armstrong told KFOX.

The bar owners and residents hope that with the help of the city, that can happen.

"Make sure that the success of our business does not spill over and affect the neighboring residents," said Armstrong.

City Council has one big decision to make Tuesday: Will they allow permit parking only for a few of the surrounding neighborhoods? That will give the residents some relief, but leave even less parking for those who want to go to the bars.
