EL PASO, Texas -- With the idea of a federal tax cut on gasoline floating around, some state lawmakers are considering giving drivers a break from the state tax on gas.Sens. John McCain and Hillary Rodham Clinton have been pushing for a so-called tax holiday over the summer. The break would spare drivers from paying federal taxes on gas, which would amount to 18 cents per gallon.Lawmakers in Texas, Missouri, and New York have proposed a break from state gas taxes.Texas's state tax on gas is 20 cents per gallon. If lawmakers decide to cut state tax on gas it would reduce prices at the pump by 38 cents. The average price of gas in El Paso is currently $3.49.The average car owner who spends between $40 and $50 on gas would save a little more than $4 per tank."I think it would be helpful for a lot of us here in El Paso. Gas right now is real expensive and it's costing us a lot of money to fill up our tanks, especially people who drive trucks," said Raul Garcia, of Socorro. However, not everyone agrees lower gas prices for the summer will help the situation."How long is the break for? A couple of days? A weekend? What's the difference? They're going to put them back up in a couple of days. It doesn't matter," said Jacob Day, of east El Paso.Presidential candidate Barack Obama opposes the federal tax break and has said it is a political gimmick."It is not designed over the long term to lower gas prices; it's designed to get somebody through an election," said Obama.Whether or not consumers will see a break at the pump is yet to be determined.
