EL PASO, Texas -- After more than seven hours of deliberations, a jury felt convicted child killer David Renteria would be a continuing threat to society and that he should be sentenced to death. Renteria's mother, Eva Renteria, looked distraught as she left the courtroom. She had only one comment for the media."The person they needed to investigate is the little girl's father, they needed him. He knows who did it," said Renteria.During Renteria's first trial, he told police he abducted 5-year-old Alexandra Flores from the Wal-Mart in 2001 because members of the Azteca gang forced him to. Flores' body was found in an open garage in Downtown El Paso. Allegedly, Flores' father has ties with that gang. That evidence was not present during his re-sentencing hearing. Meanwhile, the Flores family was dealing with their own emotions."We feel bad for these people for Renteria's family because they're losing him. But he is not a person to be out in society," said Perla Sanchez, Flores' aunt.Sanchez said the hearing was very difficult on the family because it was like re-living the event."I know none of this is going to bring Alexandra back but we know he is not going to hurt another child," said Sanchez. This hearing may be over and Renteria will go back in his cell, but for the families their road to closure will probably never be complete."We're just going to pray that everything will go well for his family. For us it's justice was served," said Sanchez.District Attorney Jaime Esparza explained that most inmates on death row serve on average four to six years, but he said there are some inmates going on more than 20 years.
