Police Find Missing Girl

POSTED: 9:12 pm MDT May 3, 2008
UPDATED: 12:58 pm MDT May 4, 2008

A 15-year-old girl at the center of a nationwide Amber Alert was found in El Paso and police said she is wanted in connection with an alleged slaying.

Authorities said Morgan Leppert was reported missing by her mother on April 22 and she was found Saturday.

Police said Leppert and her boyfriend, Toby Lowry, 22, and an unidentified person were taken into custody Saturday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Gateway West and Yarbrough Boulevard.

Florida investigators said the three were spotted off I-10 panhandling.

An Oklahoma businessman said he saw Leppert and recognized her from the nationwide Amber Alert and then called the police.

Authorities said Leppert and Lowery are wanted in connection to the alleged slaying of a 66-year-old man from Florida.

Police said the slain man’s phone number was found in the 15-year-old’s phone and that the couple allegedly stole the elderly man’s truck and drove to El Paso.

Darrel Petry, spokesman for the El Paso Police Department, said, “She is at a facility where we hold children at this time. She is with investigators. He is being interviewed by detectives for the Putnam County Sheriffs Department.”

Authorities said a Florida investigator would come to El Paso to help with the case and that the boyfriend, Lowry, was charged for stealing the truck and interfering with the custody of a child.

All three stayed in El Paso overnight.
