At least seven deaths in Arkansas were being blamed Friday on severe weather that pushed through several states. The Arkansas Department of Emergency management said at least 13 people were injured.

Strong storms moved through northwest Arkansas and the River Valley overnight, with the worst damage appearing to be in Washington, Benton and Adair counties, according to TV station KHBS-TV in Fort Smith, Ark.

A 15-year-old girl who was crushed by a tree as she slept in her bed died in Benton County. Police said the girl was asleep in her bedroom in Siloam Springs when a tree fell on the house. A 10-year-old boy was also in the room, but he was not severely hurt. Authorities have not released the names of the children.

In central Arkansas, a state emergency official confirmed that two people died in Conway County. Emergency spokesman Tommy Jackson had no further details.

Thousands of people in Northwest Arkansas and parts of the River Valley were without electricity Friday morning.

Siloam Springs Schools were closed Friday due to power outages.

Missouri Pounded

In Missouri, hurricane-force winds, hail and heavy rain left hundreds of Kansas City-area homes and businesses damaged and some destroyed Friday.

Authorities said the worst damage was in the city's northern and eastern suburbs, where power was knocked out to thousands of customers.

Firefighters said one Gladstone home was blown off its foundation.

Fire officials said several people were injured.

An 18-wheeler was blown over on Interstate 29 in Riverside, near five empty train cars that were toppled.

The National Weather Service said winds reached 80 mph in the Kansas City area.

The town of Ava reported several buildings were damaged or destroyed, including a school.

Ozark schools were closed due to a power outage.

Storms Hit Oklahoma

In Oklahoma, no injuries or significant damage was reported despite a storm system Thursday night that produced severe thunderstorms and at least two tornadoes.

Hail as large as baseballs caused a medicine-ball-size headache for residents in eastern Oklahoma County, TV station KOCO in Oklahoma City reported.

Many vehicles were damaged from hail in Thursday night's thunderstorms, including several squad cars parked at the Midwest City substation.

At nearby Rose State College, parking lots were filled with dented and damaged cars caused by pounding hail.

"Well, we were told to evacuate the classroom, and when we came down, we noticed there was hail all over the (ground). And, wow, you know, I noticed that the cars were damaged," said Roy Callender.
