Probation Officer Testifies At Renteria Re-Sentencing

David Renteria sat solemn in court Saturday, as his former probation officer, Caroline Martinez, testified about his numerous probation violations. As KFOX reported, he had been placed on probation after his 1994 conviction of indecency with a child -- but as Martinez told the jury, he did not attend a number of required drug and alcohol treatments.

"Probably out of the 30 times that I was supposed to see him, he probably missed six appointments," Martinez said.

Martinez also testified Renteria had been arrested twice on a charge of driving while intoxicated during his probation, and she said she even caught him twice drinking at local bars, another violation.

He was "drinking and dancing," Martinez said.

Martinez testified that when she confronted Renteria for his violations, he denied drinking and started to shake and cry uncontrollably. While the prosecution used this evidence to try to prove Renteria's pattern of reckless behavior, the defense argued he was coping with a troubled background. Renteria is getting another sentencing hearing, because a state appeals court ruled that prosecutors introduced testimony that left jurors with the wrong impression Renteria had no remorse for the abduction and killing of 5-year-old Alexandra Flores back in 2001.
