Red Cross Seeks Volunteers In Otero County

Now volunteers are using new energy to prepare for the area's upcoming fire season.

Since March, the chapter faced diminishing funds and a lack of community support, but with almost a fire a day, the community learned the importance of the chapter's presence.

Volunteers counted 1,400 cots and beds just in case fires call for them in the event of a fire evacuation.

“Currently we are on standby for wildfires within our chapter jurisdiction. Otero County is expected to be especially dry,” said Frank Hielscher of the Red Cross.

He said there are 120 volunteers that need to be trained and updated.

The community is offering ideas on how the chapter can increase community involvement.

”I think it's good to target college students because we do need to get involved, and we have a lot of time,” said Adriana Diaz, a New Mexico State University student.

Another student, Nic Marckstadt suggested that employers look for volunteer opportunities when hiring. He said, “Last year interviewing with a whole bunch of people for the career fair they actually take a bunch of charity work real seriously.”

The chapter’s interim director also has some ideas for chapter itself.

”On the chapter's part, we need to make sure the community is more aware. We should send out press releases and involve the media to get the word out,” said Princess Kang, Red Cross interim director.

Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miagishima hosts a Mayor's Gala next Tuesday, inviting mayors from around the area to share their experiences with the Red Cross.

It takes place at the Farm and Ranch Museum at 4100 Dripping Springs Road from 6-8 p.m.

The event costs $150 per person or $250 per couple.

The Red Cross is also looking for volunteers to help in Otero County. There's a training session Saturday at the Las Cruces office from 11 a.m. to noon.

If you would like more information on the Gala, or would like to volunteer, you can call the Las Cruces office at (575) 526-2631.
