Shapleigh Ready To Fight With Payday Lenders

Everywhere you go in El Paso, payday lenders seem to be there offering fast cash, but State Senator Eliot Shapleigh said it all comes at a huge price, with interest rates as high as 1,100 percent.

"So you'll go borrow $300 to get your car fixed because you can't get it to work, and on the other side of it, it's a $3,000 bill at the end of the year because you've had fees added in, it's been flipped twice," said Shapleigh.

El Pasoans KFOX spoke believe that the government should get involved.

"I think it's a good idea," said Virginia Marquez from West El Paso. "People need to keep as much money as they have earned and it's good to look for that regulation."

"I think there needs to be a cap at some point," said Josephine Lucro, also from West El Paso.

Marquez said those who go to payday lenders are often left helpless.

"It's a desperate situation sometimes, they don't know what they are getting into," said Marquez.

Shapleigh told KFOX he has tried to pass bills on this issue to limit the interest rates, but he believes typical problems in Austin have made it very difficult.

"I've tried to pass 25 bills in the last three sessions on payday lending, and there over there with a squat of lobbyists there are 100 of them following me around to kill these bills," said Shapleigh.

Shapleigh said if you feel strongly about this issue, there is one solution; Elect new people to the Texas legislature that will make changes.
