Interstate Closed Wednesday Due To Low Visibility

The winds were so strong Wednesday the New Mexico Department of Transportation closed down Interstate 10 between Las Cruces and Deming for several hours.

Authorities said road conditions became too dangerous creating low visibility and control problems for high-profile vehicles.

The interstate was closed from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The closure started south of Deming, stretching to the airport exit in Las Cruces.

"The New Mexico 11 closure actually was the first closure and that was between Deming and Columbus. From there it went to Interstate 10 with these strong winds and blowing dust then we closed the route to Deming and Las Cruces from there we closed a route on New Mexico 26," said Bridget Spedalieri with New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The stretch of Interstate 10 between Las Cruces and Deming is often shut down during high winds.
